Widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest goalkeepers, he stood tall as Nigeria’s last line of defense during some of the team’s most iconic moments.

He was a key figure during Nigeria’s golden era, representing the Super Eagles at two FIFA World Cups—in 1994 (USA) and 1998 (France).

Moreover, he played in several Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments and was Nigeria’s goalkeeper when the country lifted the 1994 AFCON trophy.

“His presence in goal brought confidence to the team. Rufai was not just a player, he was a leader,” said a former teammate reacting to the news.

At the club level, Rufai’s career spanned across Europe.

He played in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, showcasing his talent and discipline abroad.

Meanwhile, his passing adds to an already tragic day in the world of sports.

Just hours before, reports confirmed the sudden death of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother in a car accident in Spain.

However, as the nation mourns, prayers continue to flow for the peaceful rest of Peter Rufai.
