Although the exact cause of the explosion remains unconfirmed, speculations suggest that a petrol tanker might have been involved.

Multiple videos shared on X captured the intensity of the fire, with concerned citizens warning others to avoid the area.

An X user, Tonye Oliver, described the scene as a “major disaster,” while another user, Pamilerin Adegoke, urged commuters to stay away. “Please avoid the bridge, heavy fire right now,”Adegoke posted.

Meanwhile, emergency responders were swiftly deployed to the location.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, stating that efforts were underway to contain the situation.

LASEMA’s spokesperson, Nosa Okunbor, in a WhatsApp message, disclosed that their “Tiger Response Team” was already on-site. “Some sort of explosion. Awaiting preliminary report,” he added.

The explosion highlights a recurring safety concern at Otedola Bridge, a known hotspot for tanker-related accidents.

Previous incidents have caused significant loss of lives and property, raising urgent questions about the enforcement of safety regulations for petroleum tankers.

Moreover, the explosion has disrupted movement on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, causing significant inconvenience for commuters.

For now, motorists have been advised to seek alternative routes while emergency teams work to bring the situation under control.
