Nigerian Air Force Investigates Alleged Civilian Deaths in Zamfara Airstrike

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched an investigation into reports of civilian casualties during an airstrike in the Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, was part of Operation Fansan Yamma, targeting bandits responsible for terrorizing the region.

While the operation reportedly neutralized key allies of notorious bandit leader Bello Turji and facilitated the rescue of hostages, reports emerged alleging that 16 civilians, including members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard and local vigilantes, were mistakenly killed in the airstrike.

Responding to the reports, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal confirmed on Sunday that some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and vigilantes were among the casualties.

Meanwhile, the Air Force, in an earlier statement, highlighted the operation’s success but did not address the claims of civilian deaths.

NAF spokesperson Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa later issued a statement reiterating the effectiveness of the mission but acknowledging the need to investigate the alleged civilian casualties.

“The Nigerian Air Force views with grave concern reports of the loss of civilian lives in the course of the operation,” Akinboyewa stated.

He assured the public that a comprehensive probe is underway to determine the accuracy of these allegations.

“As a responsible and professional custodian of airpower, the NAF believes in the absolute value of every Nigerian life,” he added.

Akinboyewa emphasized the Air Force’s commitment to protecting civilians and ensuring the safety of all Nigerians during operations.

“Our mission in the North-West remains to combat banditry and restore peace.

We will work closely with all relevant authorities to unravel the facts and take appropriate steps,” he stated.

The investigation aims to provide clarity on the incident and uphold the Air Force’s responsibility to minimize harm to civilians while fulfilling its mandate of ensuring security.

The NAF’s actions are seen as crucial to maintaining public trust and restoring peace in the troubled North-West region.
