Lagos Bus Driver Dies in Tragic Crash Near Otedola Bridge

A yet-to-be-identified driver of a Lagos intra-city bus lost his life in a fatal road accident near Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, involved a minibus colliding with a moving truck due to brake failure caused by excessive speeding, according to a statement by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs at LASTMA.

The severe impact left the driver trapped in the mangled wreckage.

Despite the swift intervention of LASTMA officers, along with LASAMBUS personnel and the FRSC, efforts to rescue him proved unsuccessful.

“Regrettably, despite their commendable efforts, the driver was recovered lifeless,” Adebayo confirmed.

Meanwhile, other passengers were successfully rescued without injuries, as officers managed the scene efficiently.

The driver’s body was handed over to FRSC officials, with security support provided by the Alausa Police Division during the operation.

Commenting on the tragic event, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, emphasized the dangers of excessive speeding and urged motorists to prioritize safety.

“This heartbreaking incident serves as a profound reminder of the dire consequences of reckless driving. We implore all road users to prioritize safety and exercise utmost caution while on the road,”” he stated.

He further stressed the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and adherence to traffic regulations to prevent similar future occurrences.

LASTMA extended sympathies to the deceased’s family while reaffirming its commitment to promoting road safety and preventing avoidable accidents.

The agency encouraged drivers to adopt safer driving habits and highlighted the need for vigilance and discipline to safeguard lives.

“We will continue to educate and enforce traffic rules to ensure safer roads for all,”Bakare-Oki assured.

The incident serves as a stark warning for motorists to remain vigilant and prioritize road safety, particularly on high-speed expressways prone to accidents.
