Putin Approves Record $126 Billion Defense Budget Amid Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has authorized an unprecedented defense budget for 2025, allocating approximately $126 billion, or 13.5 trillion rubles, to national defense.

This marks a significant increase from the previous record set for 2024, with military spending now comprising 32.5% of the government’s total budget.

The move comes as Moscow continues its military efforts in Ukraine, where it is engaged in fierce battles along key frontlines.

Despite its vast resources, the prolonged conflict has strained Russia’s economy and population.

The new budget reflects a calculated focus on bolstering military strength during a critical period.

However, concerns about long-term economic implications persist, especially with slight reductions in defense spending forecasted for 2026 and 2027.

Meanwhile, Ukraine, which has heavily relied on Western allies, received a fresh aid package worth over half a billion dollars from Germany earlier this week.

Questions remain about the future of U.S. support for Ukraine as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, adding another layer of uncertainty to the protracted conflict.
