The Super Eagles of Nigeria have suffered a significant eight-place drop in the latest FIFA rankings, sliding from 36th to 44th in the world.

The decline announced on Thursday, November 28, is attributed to their disappointing results in recent matches, including a shocking 2-1 defeat to Rwanda during the final phase of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

This loss, coupled with a 1-1 draw against the Benin Republic, marked an end to their unbeaten run in the qualifying series at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

In spite of securing a spot at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, Nigeria’s performance has left them ranked fifth in Africa, dropping from fourth place. Algeria has now overtaken the Super Eagles to secure fourth on the continent while retaining 37th in the world.

Morocco remains Africa’s top-ranked team, sitting at 14th globally, followed by Senegal in 17th and Egypt in 33rd.

On the global stage, Argentina continues to hold the number one spot despite a recent loss to Paraguay, with France, Spain, England, and Brazil completing the top five rankings.

The Super Eagles’ decline marks their most significant drop in recent years, raising concerns among fans.

However, with the AFCON tournament approaching, there is hope for redemption. Football enthusiasts are urging the team to regroup and work towards reclaiming their place among Africa’s and the world’s elite teams.

As one of Nigeria’s most cherished teams, the Eagles still have the opportunity to turn things around with determination and strategic planning.
