Nigerian-American Afrobeats star David Adeleke popularly known as Davido recently faced criticism after posting about his participation in the ongoing U.S. presidential election on October 5, 2024.
Sharing a picture of himself with an “I voted” sticker, Davido excitedly announced it was his first time voting.
However, the post did not sit well with many Nigerians, who accused him of neglecting to show similar enthusiasm or support during Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election.
Some fans labeled his actions hypocritical, expressing frustration at his focus on the U.S. election while Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship and perceived government negligence.
The singer’s post ignited strong reactions across X, with social media personality Daniel Regha commenting, “Davido, where was this energy during this Nigerian general election? “You didn’t show proof of vote, didn’t show support to voters, or even bother to use your platform to call on the INEC when there were reports of electoral malpractices across the country.”
Other fans echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that, given the challenging times in Nigeria, Davido’s choice to share his U.S. voting experience was tone-deaf.
Many urged celebrities to be more attentive to issues within their home country before seeking validation abroad, emphasizing the importance of solidarity with those enduring the struggles back home.
